SIN is a community-based not for profit organisation that promotes the health, rights and well-being of South Australian sex workers while affirming their occupational and human rights.

SIN is seeking a dynamic new member to join its project team. This position will specifically target, but is not limited to, male identifying sex workers. You will work as part of a team that provides outreach, peer support, and health promotion services to SA sex workers. This may include private, brothel and street-based sex workers, receptionists and brothel owners in Adelaide and regional South Australia. A driver’s licence is a strongly desirable criteria.

Sex work experience is essential for this position, and knowledge of the South Australian sex industry is desirable.

Position Overview

This position is responsible the delivery of preventative education strategies aimed at increasing HIV, Hepatitis C and sexual and other health awareness among male sex workers in South Australia. This position will specifically target, but is not limited to, male sex workers. You will work as part of an project team that provides outreach, peer support, and health promotion to SA sex workers.

Main activities

  • Contact and provide online outreach, home visits and peer education programs to male sex workers.
  • Participate in other outreach as required
  • Provide appropriate information and support and/or referral to sex workers and others who contact SIN.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate targeted information, education resources and social marketing campaigns to promote HIV, Hepatitis C and sexual and other health awareness among sex workers and their clients.
  • Undertake a range of community development activities for SA male sex workers.
  • Continually build and enhance partnerships with agencies and external service providers to ensure coordinated responses to sex workers’ needs.
  • Liaise with and provide training to agencies and groups in contact with male sex workers, with a view to coordinating HIV, Hep C and sexual and other health education and support for sex industry workers.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to an on-going process of supervision, unit meetings, team meetings, general staff meetings, quality improvement and professional development strategies.
  • Collect and maintain appropriate statistics, administrative records and written reports.
  • Maintain a professional standard of behaviour and ensure confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties to assist with the work of the unit as requested by your supervisor (or designate).

Selection criteria

Essential

  • Lived experience as a sex worker, and a good understanding of and commitment to sex worker issues.
  • Basic understanding of and willingness to train further in HIV, sexual and other health including STIs and BBVs (such as Hepatitis C).
  • Commitment to the partnership approach to HIV prevention working in partnership with organisations to deliver quality services to SA sex workers.
  • An ability to analyse and act upon complex situations in an appropriate and effective manner, including the ability to develop programs and campaigns that address those situations and other issues as required.
  • Well-developed organisational and time management skills, experience in the use of Microsoft Office and similar programs.
  • Demonstrated abilities to work with minimal supervision as well as part of a team and excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • A full current driver’s licence.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience of health promotion and the principles of peer education, harm minimisation and community development.
  • An understanding of alcohol and other drug use issues.

Additional Information

This is a permanent part time position (24 hours per fortnight) subject to ongoing funding and organisational change and based in Adelaide.

Staff are employed under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. The position will be paid at the equivalent of pro-rata (0.32) of the MA SCHADS Award Level 4, Pay Point 1 (under the transitional wage schedule from NAPSA SACS Award $32.37 per hour, $63,121.50 per annum). Salary packaging is available for employees.
